Kia Telluride crowned World Car of the Year 2020

The declaration of the World Automotive Awards winners each year is a momentous day, graced by leaders of selected carmakers and jury members. Nonetheless, this year, when the planet grapples with the COVID-19 pandemic, the winners of the Planet Car Awards 2020 – initially expected to be revealed at the now-canceled New York car show – have been confirmed digitally via a live stream.

The Kia Telluride, which was named World Car of the Year 2020, is winning this year’s major reward. The Telluride is Kia’s full-size, three-row SUV, which made it from a total of 29 vehicles competing for the title onto the shortlist of the final three. The Mazda 3 and Mazda CX-30 were the key brands in the race for World Car of the Year.

The Soul EV winning the World Urban Car of the Year 2020 award is making it a sweeter occasion for Kia. The Soul is also sold as a pure electric variant in its new iteration, and it is this EV that has bagged the award in the race, defeating the all-electric Mini Cooper SE and Volkswagen T-Cross. Wins for the Telluride and Soul EV represent the first time Kia Motors models have won a World Car Awards honor.

Porsche is another company that’s bagged a double victory. The 911 maker made a complete sweep in the World Performance Car division, with the inclusion of the 718 Boxster / Cayman GT4, the new-gen 911 and the Taycan. It was the Taycan who emerged triumphant from the team, winning the year 2020 prize for the world value vehicle.

The triumph of The Taycan represents Porsche’s sixth win in the division of High Class Vehicle. The Taycan also defeated the Porsche 911 and the Mercedes-Benz EQC to pick up the World Luxury Car of the Year award. This was the Mazda 3 that won the year 2020 award for World Car Model, outscoring the Taycan and the Peugeot 208.
