Jeep Compass gets new engine options for Europe

Jeep also made a range of updates for the 2020 model year to its Compass SUV, including the addition of a modern turbo-petrol engine and dual-clutch gearbox. The revised Compass would first go on sale in Europe, accompanied by a handful of other countries.

The 2020 Compass is having a new 1.3 liter turbo-petrol engine. The engine is available in 130hp form with a manual 6-speed gearbox and 150hp form with a new dual-clutch 6-speed automatic. Both 1.3 engine versions put out 40Nm more torque than the 250Nm figure for the outgoing 1.4 petrol.

The new dry dual-clutch gearbox also brings with it a Sport mode that also increases the steering weight along with adjusting shift behaviour, holding on to a lower gear and boosting throttle response.

Jeep will also be offering a 4xe plug-in hybrid version abroad that uses the same 1.3-liter rear-axle mated petrol for all-wheel driving. The 4xe can be in form of 190hp and 240hp. Finally, to reduce particulate pollution, the 1.6-liter diesel engine on the European-spec Compass now gets selective catalytic reduction. Further technical updates include a lightweight and more radical retuned steering rack, and modern shock absorbers to reduce body motions and enhance brake efficiency.

While a more comprehensive facelift comes in early next year, its new wheel design makes the updated Jeep Compass identifiable. Five additional exterior colors will also be eligible for the SUV, used in conjunction with a black roof. The updated Compass, inside the cabin, gets the latest Uconnect 5 services from Jeep across the range. This provides an array of online functions and the ability to connect the car to a smart watch or a mobile app. The new 4xe models will also incorporate equipment including pre-conditioning in cabin.

It needs to be seen whether and when India gets the latest 1.3-liter turbo-petrol engine in place of the existing 1.4 model. What is known is that in early 2021 India will be getting a substantially updated Compass. The facelifted compass will incorporate changes in sheet metal, all-new front and rear bumpers, re-profiled headlamps and a new grill with inserts similar to honeycombs. The updated Compass will probably also get a redone dashboard with a larger infotainment screen. Jeep’s 2.0-liter BS6-compliant diesel will be the pillar of India’s range.
